BAS Cinematheque

Bet Am Shalom and Cinematheque, our popular and stimulating film series, returns with Back to the Fatherland.

A documentary film by Katharina Rohrer and Gil Levanon

Why would any Jew want to leave Israel to go back to the countries that once  tortured and exterminated their ancestors?
Why have so many young Israelis left the dream of living in their homeland to settle, work and frequently marry in The Fatherland?
Back to the Fatherland explores these questions and the themes of persecution, anti-semitism, identity and the intergenerational transmission of trauma through co-directors with a unique lens on the issues.

Gil Levanon is from Israel and a grandchild of a Holocaust survivor. Katharina Rohrer is from Austria and a grandchild of a Nazi officer
