Acharei Kiddush: Gender in Jewish Tradition, Values, and Theology

June 17, 2023 at 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm

Join journalist, professor, and activist, Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson for a discussion on gender and Judaism. As gay and lesbian lives were a generation ago, transgender lives are today, often the subject of intense debate, persecution, and ignorance. And, to be sure, the realities of trans experience are new to many of us.  But while the categories and technologies of trans identities are new, gender non-conformity is found throughout history – and the Jewish tradition in particular.  Following the classic Jewish taxonomy of God, Torah, and Israel, this celebration of gender diversity will explore the spectrum of gender as it appears in Biblical heroes, Jewish ethics, and even Jewish theology.

No one will be shamed or canceled in this talk!  Rather, we’ll take on this exploration in the spirit of curiosity, joy, and personal growth.

Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson is a frequent commentator on CNN and a columnist for Rolling Stone and a visiting fellow at the Center for LGBTQ & Gender Studies in Religion. Jay co-leads the Hazon Jewish meditation retreat and writes and teaches meditation in a variety of contexts. He holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Thought from Hebrew University, a JD from Yale, and nondenominational rabbinic ordination, and worked as a professional LGBTQ activist for ten years, founding two religious LGBTQ nonprofits, Nehirim and Eshel.  His ten books include God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality, Everything is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism and his newest, The Heresy of Jacob Frank: From Jewish Messianism to Esoteric Myth, which won the 2022 National Jewish Book Award for scholarship.
