Meals in a Jar for MLK Jr Day

On Martin Luther King Jr Day, 2020 under the guidance and organization of the Tikkun Olam chevra, Bet Am Shalom Synagogue held our fifth annual Meals in a Jar day. Laura Solomon, chair of the Tikkun Olam chevra, led the day’s activities, which included assembling 130 “meals in jars” which will be brought to Centro Hispano in White Plains.

There was a table for a letter-writing campaign in support of The Protect Our Courts Act (New York State Bill A.2176/S.425). Because there has been a 1200% increase in ICE courthouse operations between 2016 and 2017, the surge in immigrant arrests in and around courthouses has made immigrants fearful of going to court to get orders of protection, child support, tenant protection, and a fair trial for those facing criminal charges. This is a vital bill, and it is not too late to contact Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Carl Heastie and the Governor.

These activities were followed by a talk by our Rabbi, Les Bronstein, and then songs and guitar playing by Galeet Dardashti and Rabbi Bronstein. Of course, there was food available all morning long!
