BAS Cinematheque

Bet Am Shalom and Cinematheque, our popular and stimulating film series, presents The Tobacconist.

An expert depiction of the tensions in Vienna on the eve of the Nazi takeover, this film is also a vibrant coming of age story and an intriguing portrayal of a young man’s relationship with the elderly Sigmund Freud. The psychoanalyst, known for his love of cigars, is a frequent customer in the tobacco shop where the17 year old protagonist works and seeks his advice. Freud is supportive but has other pressing concerns, especially the rising anti-Semitism in Vienna.

Based on the international bestseller by Robert Seethaler.
