BAS Cinematheque: A Tale of Love and Darkness

February 28, 2021 at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

NOTE NEW TIME. A Tale of Love and Darkness, a film based on Amos Oz’s acclaimed international best-selling memoir,  recounts Oz’s relationship with his mother (Natalie Portman) and is set during the end of the British Mandate and the early years of the State of Israel. Traumatized by the memory of what she and her husband have left behind, Oz’s mother Fania swings unpredictably between inspiring her son with tales of a faraway land to retreating into a lost world.  Struggling with raising her son in the foreign city of Jerusalem, and grappling with a married life filled with unfulfilled promises, Fania battles her inner demons and longs for a better world for her son Amos.

This film examines an important moment in Israeli history through a deeply personal lens.

In Hebrew with English subtitles.

The discussion will be led and moderated by Stewart Crane and Gerry Gartenberg.

The film must be viewed ahead of time (on Netflix). View trailer.
