Embodying Sanctuary: How Faith Communities Can Create Space for Immigrants

December 19, 2020 at 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Join Reverend Micah Bucey, the Multi-Faith Coordinator for the New Sanctuary Coalition, to discuss the current plight of immigrants attempting to find new life in the United States and the faithful friends who support their journeys.Founded in 2007, New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) is a multi-faith immigrant-led organization that creates support systems for and empowers those navigating the immigration system. NSC brings together citizen volunteers and immigrants – called Friends – to achieve two primary goals: equip Friends with the knowledge they need to navigate the immigration system and lead the movement, and train and mobilize citizens and faith leaders to support and fight alongside Friends, advocating for urgently needed changes to the system.NSC’s grassroots programs are designed to shine a light on and disrupt the systems that criminalize immigrants’ existence. Core programs include the pro se immigration clinic, accompaniment, anti-detention, and community organizing and advocacy.Zoom link TBDQuestions?____________________________________________A graduate of Fordham University and Union Theological Seminary and a United Church of Christ-ordained minister, Reverend Micah Bucey currently serves Judson Memorial Church of New York City, a congregation committed to curiously seeking the intersections between spirituality, justice, and creativity. At Judson, Micah’s work includes serving as the Multi-Faith Coordinator for the New Sanctuary Coalition, a faith-based immigrant justice organization that was founded at Judson, and spearheading Judson Arts Wednesdays (JAW), a weekly art and food gathering that provides free meals for guests in need and developmental space for artists in need, colliding all in a program that addresses both food justice and the art community’s constant lack of resources and support. Over the course of its ten seasons, JAW has fed thousands and nurtured the creative output of hundreds.
