The Book of Jonah: God’s Evolving Response to Sin and Repentance

Join in a discussion about the Book of Jonah, read during the afternoon service of Yom Kippur when the Gates of Repentance are beginning to close.The Book tells the story of the reluctant prophet who successfully saves the city of Nineveh. It is traditionally understood to remind us that there is still time left before the blowing of the shofar for us to find redemption. In this class, we will explore Jonah by comparing him to Noah and discover that the two stories read together reveal insight into the price of prophecy and God’s changing response to humankind’s attraction to evil.  The hope of Jonah comes from realizing that our God is not the God of Noah, but the God of a reluctant prophet.  Link to Zoom registration to follow.Questions?_________________Steve Feingold, a long time member of Bet Am Shalom, received his BA in Jewish Studies at UCLA with high honors and later studied  Tanach, Talmud, and Jewish Codes at Machon Pardes in Jerusalem.   He has taught classes at Jewish camps and day schools, as well as at the Free Jewish U at UCLA and UC Berkeley.
